Whole world is shocked and saddened by the devastation caused by
the earthquake in Gujarat and its tragic effects on the people of the
affected area. We all share their pain and deeply condole the death of
the victims. We also convey our sincere sympathies to the families which
have lost their homes and their loved ones. May God give them strength
to withstand this ordeal!
We are overwhelmed by the spontaneous response of the Indian-
American community in and around Chicago and rest of the United States.
The people of Indian origin and many American / foreign friends have
been offering their contributions in cash/ kind/ in the form of
medicines/ medical equipments/ other relief material. We express our
grateful thanks for their response and appreciate their humanitarian
gesture and will be glad to assist them in any manner we can.
A number of Government offices, NGOs, international
organizations, Indian community associations and charitable institutions
are involved in accepting and sending the contributions to India. The
details of such organizations are available on the website of the
Embassy of India, Washington and the Indian Consulates in Chicago, San
Francisco, Houston and New York. We
are closely coordinating with the branches of State Bank of India and
Air India for transfer of funds/ transportation of relief material. For
the benefit of those who may like to utilize the Government channels,
the details of various organizations, their contact phone/fax numbers /
e-mail addresses and the type of items required in India on priority
basis, are given below.
We had kept the Consulate open for emergency visa services last
weekend and will do so again during the coming weekend. After office
hours, for any urgent matters related to the earthquake relief, the
