Prime Minister's National Relief Fund

Government of India and Consulate General of India, Chicago continue to receive a number of offers for contributions to the earthquake relief activities in Gujarat, India. Those who wish to make voluntary contributions may do so by sending checks in dollars or rupees to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. (details of which are available on our website  www.chicago.indianconsulate.com)

No excise duty on relief material for earthquake hit areas

The Central Government have provided full exemption from excise duty to goods donated or purchased out of cash donations, for the relief and rehabilitation of persons affected by the earthquake that struck the State of Gujarat on 26th January, 2001. A similar exemption has been provided from customs duty to imported goods intended for donation for the same purpose. Notification Nos. 2/2001-Central Excise and 7/2001-Customs, both dated 27.01.2001 containing the procedure required for availing of these exemptions have been issued in this regard. The notifications take immediate effect.

 

Air-India coordination 

Air India will lift relief material from various parts of the world on a priority basis at free of charge for the Gujarat quake victims. The relief material would be accorded priority keeping in view the urgency of its requirement for the victims.

 

What to donate:   Our priority is for items required for search and rescue operations such as sniffer dogs, electronic equipment for searching for bodies and cutting concrete slabs, communication equipment as also mobile surgical operation theatres and other medical hardware.  Offers for the supply of clothes and tents will be accepted if the donors could arrange for their  transportation to  Ahmedabad.  Medical and rescue teams will be welcomed provided they come in their own aircraft.

In the United States, the Air-India flies from Chicago . The Consulate General in Chicago & New York will coordinate between Air-India and the donors.

In case, medical/rescue teams arrive without visas,  instructions have been issued to  the Government of Gujarat to issue visas on arrival.

Journalists who intend to visit India to cover the earthquake disaster need to follow the prescribed procedure to obtain visa.  Journalists are
advised to travel separately and not accompany the relief teams.
